They call it the Bedford Challenge. Read the entire book cover to cover. On June 9th, 2013, I completed the Bedford Challenge. There were actually several good stories in here and I really enjoyed the challenge. Most of the ones that we read for my AP Literature class were depressing and difficult to wade through, but upon further inspection the Bedford really does have some great and interesting literary pieces. The way it is structured is the best I've seen in a textbook. The different insight...more

Good selection of short stories, poetry, and drama/plays. Some of the info/descriptions does appear biased (the difference between 'literature' and 'formula fiction').

This was a required text for the English introduction courses I took in college and it is one of select few that I've held on to and often referred to since. Other than being a thorough and well-organized reference book, 'The Bedford' is a treasure trouve of short stories and poetry worth reading. The text also includes tons of references for authors or readings to check out.
A vast selection of English literature and poetry. Too bad I dislike most of that area of reading. Most of the short stories I found boring at best and at worst struggled to get through. The poetry section was especially awful. Not recommended unless you are forced to read it for a class you are taking

This was the book for my Introduction to Literature Course at Bakersfield College.
It was an intense read as it has many examples for each of the sections it's divided into (Fiction, Poetry, Drama).
I don't have any specific complaints...It holds many excellent excerpts, short stories, poems, and plays. It also does a pretty decent job of defining things.
It's just A LOT to take in.
First off, I didn't read the whole thing. My English teacher took out various excerpts from the book, and had our class read it. I liked a lot of the stories in it, but a lot of them were just downright strange and even depressing. An interesting read, although not too fascinating.

The Bedford Reader or otherwise known as 'The Brick.' Is probably one of my favorite text books that I've ever had to get for school. The writings inside are so good, and the amount of information inside is great.
I haven't read everything in this book and it's terrible to carry around, but it's very helpful for English and has a lot of good stories/information in it.

This is an old college text that an ex-girlfriend gave me years ago after she was done with it. It's nice to pick up and read a story from now and again.

This was part of my literature class. We went over a couple of stories and poems. I have to admit, I thought it was going to be a dread, but it wasn't that bad!
